Suffering and Martyrdom in Epic Songs

Dumy offer equally graphic accounts of suffering and torment, depicting deaths as gruesome as that of Lazar and entombment similar to that of St. Varvara. In many epic songs, heroes lie dying on the field of battle. On their bodies are cuts so deep that blood gushes from them with each heartbeat, revealing the “yellow bone” underneath. They have been shot, and stabbed, and slashed, and as they suffer their death agony, there is no one to bring them water. Thus, dumy, like religious songs, focus more on what the hero endures than on what he or she does. Though termed “epic,” dumy are not, on the whole, centered around military conflict, and the heroism of their characters consists not in demonstrating great courage or outstanding fighting skills, but in enduring agony.
